My Thoughts

Sweetly Unhinged kicks off Kira Cole’s Devoted in Darkness series with a dark, obsessive romance that leans hard into morally gray behavior, dangerous attraction, and emotional intensity. The story follows Violet, whose anonymous interaction with a hacker known as The Ghost spirals into something far more consuming than expected. This was my introduction to Kira Cole and I can say I was impressed with the two main characters and how the entire plot was written.

I found that this book thrives on the extreme tension between fear and fascination, obsession and protection, vulnerability and control. I would say that if you enjoy romances where affection comes wrapped in chaos, possessiveness, and questionable decisions, this delivers exactly that. Kira Cole writes relationships that are messy, intense, and impossible to ignore.

The FMC, Violet, really stood out to me because beneath the fear, uncertainty, and chaos surrounding her, there’s a quiet resilience that keeps surfacing, keeps shining bright. She isn’t written as an instantly fearless heroine, not at all. I would say that instead, she feels more human, reacting to overwhelming situations (understatement) with vulnerability while still pushing forward. I enjoyed that her growth seemed tied to learning how to navigate danger, trust, and her own emotions rather than suddenly becoming someone completely different. Even when her choices frustrated me at times (and they will frustrate you too), they fit the intensity of the world she was thrown into. Violet brought an emotional softness to the story that balanced the darker, obsessive energy around her, making her easier to root for.

The male main character, The Ghost, is very much the definition of a morally gray, obsessive antihero. He is the kind of MMC readers either immediately love or side-eye while still turning the page. I was fascinated with him about the contrast between his dangerous, controlling tendencies and the fiercely protective devotion underneath. He operates in shadows, keeps secrets, and often blurs the line between caring and consuming, which adds to the tension throughout the story. I love myself, a complex anti-hero with a soft gooey center and in my honest opinion the author wrote him exceedingly well. The Ghost isn’t written to be a traditionally “good” man, and that’s part of what makes him compelling; his loyalty runs deep, even when his methods are questionable.

The spice in Sweetly Unhinged fits the overall tone of the book and that is intense, obsessive, and emotionally charged rather than purely playful or sweet. The intimate scenes lean heavily into the possessive dynamic between the characters, amplifying the tension, vulnerability, and darker themes already present in the story. I heavily recommend reading all the content/trigger warnings that the author lists prior to reading this book, there are some dark scenes. I was happy to experience that the spice felt tied to the relationship progression and the characters’ complicated connection, instead of existing solely for shock value (which does happen in dark romance quite a bit).

What Worked For Me:

#1 – High emotional tension

The complex dynamic interplay between the characters keeps things moving. Chemistry feels immediate and obsessive rather than slow and cautious. Tension keeps the brain spice from defaulting to something else.

#2 – Morally gray MMC

I would say that readers who love antiheroes, possessive protectiveness, and “I’d burn the world down for you” energy will probably enjoy the male lead, I know I certainly did.

#3 – Dark atmosphere

The suspense elements help separate this from lighter romance. The mood stays heavy, unpredictable, and addictive.

#4 – Compulsive pacing

Even when situations become extreme, the story pushes forward quickly enough that it’s easy to binge-read.

What Didn’t Work For Me:

#1 – The intensity between the MMC x FMC was overwhelming & fast at first

The relationship dynamics escalate fast. Readers who prefer gradual emotional development or healthier romance dynamics may struggle.

#2 – Some behaviors blur romantic vs problematic lines

Possessiveness, obsession, and control are central themes. Depending on your comfort level, some moments may be more alarming than swoony. Although I do believe Kira Cole was successful in walking that fine line that readers can feel safe in reading this book.

#3 – Emotional realism can take a backseat to drama

Certain reactions or decisions may require suspension of disbelief because the story prioritizes tension and obsession. I definitely will warn you to let reality go when reading dark romance in general, immersion into this story is essential to loving it and enjoying it like I have.

Things to Consider Before You Read:

This is dark romance, which means the content intentionally explores unhealthy dynamics, morally questionable actions, and emotionally heavy situations.

#1 – You will enjoy this if you like:

  • Obsessive heroes
  • Morally gray MMCs
  • Hacker/cyber elements
  • Touch-her-and-die energy
  • Possessive love interests
  • Protective obsession
  • High spice + suspense
  • Psychological tension
  • Dangerous devotion

#2 – You may want to skip if you prefer:

  • Healthy relationship dynamics

  • Low angst stories
  • Gentle contemporary romance
  • Minimal triggers

Content Warnings: (check official author CWs if available)

Potential themes may include:

  • Obsession
  • Possessiveness/control dynamics
  • Stalking or invasive behavior themes
  • Violence/threats
  • Emotional manipulation

Final Thoughts

Sweetly Unhinged feels written for readers who want romance at maximum intensity. Kira Cole writes a great story where love is messy, devotion is dangerous, and obsession masquerades as protection. I definitely don’t think it will be for everyone, but fans of darker romance with morally questionable characters will likely devour it.

If your favorite fictional men make terrible decisions while being wildly devoted… this one will land directly on your “just one more chapter” shelf.

Would I continue the series? I did. Book#2 Review Pending…
