My Thoughts

The Deal is one of those books that helped define the modern college sports romance genre for me. I first read this book back in 2015 when this was originally published. I loved it then, I love it now. It firmly made me Hockey Romance lover and now over 10 years later during my re-read in preparation to watch the new TV series, it is just as good. Even years after publication, Garrett Graham and Hannah Wells remain one of the most beloved romance couples for a reason.

What immediately stood out to me was how much heart this story has beneath the hockey romance exterior. The couple make you swoon. While the premise sounds light and fun, a hockey star needs tutoring and convinces a music major to fake date him, the story dives into deeper emotional territory than I had remembered. I found it extremely relevant now just as I did in 2015.

I found Hannah’s journey toward reclaiming confidence after her past trauma much more meaningful now as an older millennial and it really gave the romance emotional weight. I believe it is a huge reason this novel has withstood the true test of time. It had been over 10 years since it was published. Quite honestly, I thought Garrett could have easily become another stereotypical college playboy, but Elle Kennedy gives him surprising depth, vulnerability, and emotional intelligence. The entire re-read gives millennial rom-com vibes and a late 90’s early 2000’s vibe, that brought the nostalgia for simpler days.

The chemistry between these two is fantastic. Their banter feels natural, their friendship develops before the romance fully takes off, and their relationship growth never feels rushed. The spice is open-door and sexy without being overly dramatic, plus it isn’t out of leftfield and in random spots, it is placed exactly where it should be within the plotline.

What Worked for Me:

  • Garrett’s Character Growth

Garrett is charming from the beginning but watching him mature emotionally throughout the story was one of the strongest aspects of the book. He learns to listen, support, and respect Hannah’s boundaries rather than trying to “fix” her.

  • The Friendship Foundation

One of my favorite things in romance is when the couple likes each other. Hannah and Garrett become genuine friends before fully transitioning into a romantic relationship, which makes their connection believable. The bickering and banter between the couple is iconic and preserved well with relevance 10 years later.

  • Strong Consent Conversations

Considering when this book was published, I appreciated the emphasis on consent, communication, and Hannah’s comfort level. It feels even more relevant these days and more focused. It gives even more evidence that this book will always withstand the test of time. Overall those moments helped romance feel safe despite some heavier subject matter.

  • The Humor

The banter between Garrett and Hannah is genuinely entertaining. The friend group dynamics that eventually become the foundation for the rest of the Off-Campus series are a highlight.

  • Emotional Balance

The book balance’s heavier themes with humor, friendship, and romance without becoming overwhelmingly dark.

What Didn’t Work for Me:

  • Some Dated New Adult Elements

Certain aspects of the story felt very “early 2010s” young college adults. Some dialogue, social dynamics, and college-party culture moments may feel a bit dated to newer readers. I, however, loved it! It did not detract from my re-read at all.

  • Predictable Romance Beats

If you’ve read a lot of sports romances, many plot developments won’t surprise you. The fake dating setup follows several familiar romance conventions. However I argue this point by emphasizing this was published in 2015, so are the elements predictable or is this an “OG” hockey romance? I will let you be the judge. I don’t honestly remember feeling that the romance beats were predictable at all during my first read but that was 10 years ago now.

  • Secondary Conflict

The third-act conflict felt somewhat predictable and could have been resolved with better communication. Annoyed as always with the miscommunication trope. Was this how I originally felt? I can’t remember. Miscommunication trope was so overly used in 2000’s in almost every book and TV drama that I feel like most millennials are over it.

Things to Consider Before Reading

  • This is first and foremost a character-driven romance.
  • The story contains discussions of sexual assault trauma.
  • Readers looking for a dark hockey romance should know this leans much more toward emotional contemporary romance.
  • The explicit scenes are open-door and spicy.
  • The book focuses equally on personal growth and romance.
  • College-age characters may not appeal to readers who prefer older protagonists.

Neurodivergent Thoughts

Many neurodivergent readers often find themselves overanalyzing social situations, wondering whether someone genuinely likes them or if they’re misreading signals. Garrett becomes refreshingly direct as the relationship progresses, reducing much of the emotional guesswork that often appears in romance novels. I really enjoyed that aspect of the relationship development between the two.

I connected with Hannah’s tendency to retreat inward when she’s struggling. I have the same tendency to do the exact same thing.  While her experiences stem from trauma rather than neurodivergence, her internal processing, self-doubt, and cautious approach to vulnerability felt relatable.

The tutoring arrangement was another aspect that stood out. Hannah’s academic strengths and Garrett’s willingness to seek help highlighted the idea that intelligence isn’t one-size-fits-all. Different people excel in different areas, which is something many neurodivergent individuals can appreciate.

Finally, I loved that Garrett consistently adapts to Hannah’s comfort level rather than expecting her to change for him. That willingness to meet someone where they are emotionally is something many neurodivergent readers may find especially meaningful.

Final Thoughts

The Deal remains a standout sports romance because it delivers much more than a cute fake-dating storyline. Beneath the hockey practices, flirting, and spicy moments is a thoughtful story about healing, trust, friendship, and learning to let people in.

Garrett and Hannah have earned their place as one of the most beloved romance couples in the genre, and it’s easy to see why. Their chemistry is undeniable, their friendship is genuine, and their emotional growth feels rewarding from beginning to end.

If you enjoy college romances, hockey players with hidden golden-retriever energy, strong heroines, and relationships built on mutual respect, The Deal is absolutely worth adding to your reading list.

Overall Rating: 4.5/5

Would I Recommend It? Yes, especially if you enjoy contemporary hockey romances with extra spice.
