My Thoughts:

Kirill delivers exactly what dark mafia romance readers are looking for which is danger, obsession, tension, and a hero who operates firmly in the morally gray zone. Lillian Harris creates a story filled with tension that balances emotional vulnerability with the brutality of the criminal world, giving readers both romance and suspense. As I read this book, I was on edge and could not put the book down the tension and anticipation was so great to me.

What stood out most to me was the emotional push-and-pull between the characters. Kirill isn’t meant to be a traditional romantic hero, and the story never tries to pretend otherwise. Instead, readers are given a complex character whose actions are often driven by loyalty, protectiveness, and obsession. That combination created plenty of tension and kept me invested in how the relationship would evolve.

The romance felt intense and emotionally charged, which is something I always appreciate in a mafia romance. The chemistry between the main characters helped balance some of the darker aspects of the story and gave the relationship room to develop beyond simple attraction.

In my opinion the FMC , Sloane is more than just a love interest who is caught in such a dangerous criminal world. She has resilience, determination in spades from the beginning and as we learn more about her as the story progresses it becomes apparent why those qualities are so prominent in her. She refuses to be overshadowed by powerful forces (not just Kirill). Sloane has experienced events in her life that would break many people but she continually throughout the books showed her willingness to fight for her own future.

Kirill is ruthless, possessive and fiercely protective of the people he considers his own. As I read, I was thrilled to learn more about him, his past trauma and why he was the way he was. Being a powerful figure within the Bratva, he gets what he wants, which causes some issues with his relationship with Sloane. Kirill has manipulative tendencies and communication issues. I really enjoyed reading that below his cold, often harsh exterior he had loyalty, vulnerability. It added depth to what could have been a cliché character. His hidden softer side was what made me fall in love with him at the end.

What Worked for Me:

  • A Strong, Possessive Anti-Hero

Kirill is the ultimate definition in my opinion of a morally gray mafia hero; he correctly embodies many of the attributes dark romance readers expect. Those attributes included being overly protective, obsessive, ruthless, and fiercely loyal. I would say that readers who enjoy powerful MMCs with a softer side that is only expressed for their loved ones will likely find him irresistible.

  • Strong Romantic & Emotional Tension

The relationship development wasn’t solely built around physical attraction. Although the chemistry between the main characters is a strong element for the book’s plotline and thus it translated into spicy hot intimate scenes. I would say there were a lot of unexpected emotional layers that added depth to the romance and made me care about the outcome. The push-and-pull dynamic creates plenty of tension, making the emotional and romantic moments feel rewarding.

Fast-Paced Storytelling

The plot moves quickly, and that made it easy for me to stay engaged. Between the romance, danger, and mafia conflicts, there was always something happening to keep me engaged.

What Didn’t Work for Me:

  • Some Dark Romance Elements May Not Work for Every Reader

Certain behaviors that are common in mafia and dark romance could feel too intense for readers who prefer healthier relationship dynamics. There was nothing healthy about the main characters relationship, however I feel that readers who consume a lot of mafia romance will know this is usual dynamic for the main couple.

  • Character Decisions Can Be Frustrating

There were moments when I questioned some of the characters’ choices. I won’t spoil it but while they fit the story and the emotional stakes, they occasionally cause unnecessary frustration for both the reader and the characters. It made me shake my head and envision slapping the FMC and MMC a few times.

Things to Consider Before Reading:

  • This is a dark romance and should not be viewed as a model for healthy real-life relationships. Check content warnings in the book or on author website prior to reaching.
  • The hero is morally gray and often makes questionable decisions.
  • Violence and criminal activity are central to the plot. If you can’t deal with that don’t read this book.
  • Readers sensitive to possessive or controlling behavior might want to review content warnings beforehand or avoid this book completely.
  • The story leans heavily into emotional intensity, conflict and darker themes.

Neurodivergent Reader Thoughts

I find it intriguing that Kirill is not primarily marked as a neurodivergent or autism-focused romance. The main characters do not have any diagnosed neurodivergence, but Kirill has an autistic son. I was thrilled to read that his son was not reduced to stereotypes or used only as plot devices or a way to get readers. This emphasized an important point if not overlooked part of neurodivergence and that is we, the neurodivergent exist in every type of story and every type of family.

For me, these elements (acceptance, patience, and understanding that
Kirill gives his son) helped ground some of the darker themes of the novel. Seeing a powerful and often intimidating character like Kirill show care and concern for his son revealed a softer side that added depth to his character and made his motivations feel more complex.

While readers looking for a story centered on autism may want more representation than what’s provided here, I appreciated seeing neurodiversity included as a natural part of the world rather than treated as something that needed to be “fixed” or overcome.

As a neurodivergent reader, one of the things I appreciated most was the consistency of the emotional stakes. The motivation behind the characters’ actions generally remained clear, which made it easier to stay engaged and connected to the story.

The fast pacing also helped maintain momentum. For readers with ADHD who sometimes struggle with slower, detail-heavy narratives, Kirill provides regular plot progression and emotional payoff. The high-stakes nature of the story creates plenty of dopamine-producing moments through suspense, conflict, and relationship tension.

That said, readers who are sensitive to emotional intensity may find certain scenes overwhelming. This is a book that thrives on heightened emotions, danger, and obsession, so it may be best read when you’re in the mood for something intense rather than comforting.

Final Thoughts

Kirill is a solid addition to the dark mafia romance genre, offering danger, obsession, emotional tension, and plenty of chemistry. I reckon that readers who enjoy possessive antiheroes, Bratva romance, and high-stakes relationships will likely find a lot to enjoy here.

While some genre tropes may feel familiar (maybe overdone) and the darker elements won’t be for everyone, the combination of romance, suspense, and emotional intensity makes this an engaging read. If you’re looking for a morally gray hero and a romance that thrives on tension and passion, Kirill is worth adding to your TBR.
