Seventeen books, countless feelings, and on extremely overworked TBR and medical resident.

The Archive doors have officially closed on another month of literary chaos.

Welcome back to The Neurospicy After Dark Archive, where we read questionable fictional men so you don’t have to (except…you probably still should…I mean why wouldn’t you?), were we collect emotional support cowboy romances like Pokémon, and continue proving that my TBR has become less of a reading list and more of a legally recognized mountain range.

July was one of those rare reading months where nearly every book landed. Whether I was crying over memory loss on a Montana ranch, dodging demons with an overly enthusiastic K-9, wandering through gothic halls full of longing, or cheering on obsessive athletes and morally questionable love interests, every week brought something completely different.

Even better?

The average rating for the month ended well above four stars, making this one of my strongest reading months of the year.

Although I did not read as much as I wanted too due to the first block rotation in residency and legit I had no energy to focus after my shifts and deal with my crazy dog as well. I am however finding my feet now and feel much more grounded…so proceed with literary chaos and reviews.

Now…grab your favorite beverage (or three), settle into your favorite reading chair (or corner), and let’s crack open the July Archive.

Award to: Devour Me by Emily Rath and Bargaining by Sasha Lace

Awarded to: Love Wells Kept by Biley Hannah

If someone could kindly explain why a fictional married couple made me question every life decision while simultaneously restoring my faith in unconditional love…that would be great.

Cover of Love Wells Kept by Bailey Hannah featuring a cowboy in a tan hat and orange shirt standing on a tree stump in a sunlit green pasture beside a red barn. The tagline reads, "He's forgotten their love story. She'll help him write a new one," reflecting this emotional contemporary cowboy romance about memory loss, marriage, family, and rediscovering love.

The My K-9 Is a Demon series by Trista Ricketts

Demons.
Dogs.
Found family.
Questionable life choices.

Perfection.

Awarded to: Dáinn (Devour Me by Emily Rath)

An undead wraith who literally devours souls and still manages to become a compelling romantic lead? That’s exactly the sort of morally gray character this award was made for.

Love Wells Kept by Bailey Hannah and An Education in Longing

Looking back over the month, a few patterns became impossible to ignore (like hello, I never ignore a pattern…neurodivergent).

I clearly gravitated toward emotionally driven romances over high-drama plots. My favorite books weren’t necessarily the ones with the biggest twists, they were the ones that invested in believable character growth, vulnerability, healing, and relationships that felt earned.

Cowboys remained undefeated. As per usual.

Paranormal romance continued its strong showing with everything from dark fantasy to hilarious supernatural chaos.

Sports romance surprised me more than expected, with C.R. Jane delivering several consistently enjoyable reads that had American football players in them…not usually the sport I fall in love with in regards to my fictional men.

Perhaps my favorite discovery, though, was how diverse July became. Gothic romance, fantasy, dark romance, contemporary, paranormal comedy, sports romance, mystery, westerns…the Archive shelves became wonderfully eclectic this month.

As someone who experiences the world through an AuDHD lens, I continue to notice that the stories I connect with most aren’t necessarily the loudest or the most dramatic.

They’re the ones where communication matters.

Where emotional safety matters.

Where characters are allowed to heal imperfectly.

Where vulnerability is treated as strength instead of weakness.

Whether it was Kate and Jackson rebuilding a marriage from the ground up, other characters learning to trust despite fear, or found families embracing wonderfully chaotic lives together, so many of July’s stories explored themes of belonging, resilience, identity, and unconditional acceptance.

Those themes resonate deeply with me, not because they’re idealized, but because they acknowledge that healing rarely follows a straight line.

August’s ARC and overall book review stack is already threatening to collapse under its own weight, and honestly…I couldn’t be happier about it…this keeps me sane while I live a traumatic medical residency life outside my books and my fictional love interests.

There are more fantasy romances waiting.

More morally questionable love interests i.e. Don’t Say Mafia by CR Jane incoming…

More emotionally devastating contemporaries (why do I do this to myself?).

Probably another cowboy or three.

And undoubtedly at least one book will leave me staring blankly at a wall while I reconsider my emotional stability.

Exactly how I like it.

July reminded me of why I love reading so much.

July reminded me why I have to dig deep and keep doing this.

July reminded me I refuse to lose this part of who I am in the midst of US medical residency training and the lack of autonomy.

July reminded me that they can’t own this part of me for the next three years.

Every book offered the opportunity to step into another world, meet unforgettable characters, and experience stories that made me laugh, cry, cringe, swoon, or immediately recommend them to someone else.

Not every book was perfect.

But together, they made for one incredible month inside the Archive.

Thank you to every author and publisher who trusted me with an Advance Reader Copy this month (even though most of them were posted latem thank you US medical residency and ADHD).

Additionally, thank you to everyone who continues following along with my wonderfully neurospicy reading adventures and perspectives.

I appreciate every comment, recommendation, and conversation far more than you know.

This concludes Archive Entry 02.

All record preserved, opinions remain entirely my own, and recommendations filed with as much enthusiasm as possible.

Archive Status: 📚 July has officially been cataloged, indexed, alphabetized, emotionally processed (mostly), and carefully returned to the shelves…right next to the ever-growing pile labeled “Books That Permanently Altered My Brain Chemistry.”

Until next time… stay delightfully neurospicy, keep chasing stories that make you feel something, and may your TBR always be wildly unrealistic but never boring.
