My Thoughts
Scarred Angel by Elle Maldonado threw me into a world filled with danger, bloodshed, loyalty, and messy emotions, so it will come as no surprise that this millennial loved the fast and the furious vibe mixed with Russian mafia vibes.

This is the first book in the The Severed Heirloom series, it leans heavily into dark romance elements with mafia undertones, forbidden attractions, and characters carrying enough emotional baggage to sink a ship.

While I was reading, I felt the most enjoyable part of this book for me was the tension sitting between the FMC and MMC. Although this was my first Maldonado book, she knows how to write chemistry that feels sharp and dangerous rather than soft and romantic. The push-and-pull between vulnerability and violence kept me turning pages, I didn’t want to stop reading because I needed to know whether these characters would destroy each other or heal together.

The FMC (Valentina) is a sassy, independent, take no shit bad bitch type who was raised right. I loved that she knew what she wanted and didn’t except anything but it. The MMC (Makism) has a troubled passed, he has the wounded villainous hero trope surrounding him and lord is he swoon-worthy. The spice written between the two characters as well written and it was placed within the overall story at the correct spots and wasn’t just random “let’s bang” moments.

Overall the characters feel deeply scarred emotionally, they’ve been through some shit especially in my opinion the MMC (the book opens to a dark theme, so definitely check the content warnings prior to even starting the book) and physically, which made their decisions slightly annoying and frustrating at times but believable because that is real life. If you enjoy morally gray love interests, complicated loyalty, and relationships forged through chaos, this delivers.

What Worked For Me:
• High emotional tension
• Dark, gritty atmosphere
• Morally gray characters
• Trauma/healing themes
• Strong “love amidst destruction” energy
• Mafia + assassin elements for extra chaos
• MMC, Makism and his entire badass vibe
• Fast & Furious type vibes mixed with Scarface
• Well written spice and amazing chemistry between the FMC & MMC

What Didn’t Work for Me:
• Timeline & Time jumps can be a bit confusing (really, I just need to pay more attention)
• Started off a bit confusing (aka I should have read the first series prior to reading) and was a bit
slow pacing wise from the beginning

Things to Know Before Reading:
• Not a light romance, dark romance read for sure
• Heavy themes, lots of action and violence
• Characters make messy choices (because therapy would solve too many dark romances)
• Background of characters (Legacy series from first, consider reading the first series before starting this new one, but you an make it through the story without doing that, just expect to be mildly confused)

Would I Recommend It?
If your ideal read includes:
• Dark romance
• Touch-her-and-die energy
• Damaged characters finding connection
• Mafia worlds
• Forbidden relationships
• High spice + emotional wounds
…then Scarred Angel is worth adding to your TBR.

Readers of darker contemporary romance will probably devour this one.

I have added them to my TBR and Review List because I loved this book and the way it was written. Elle Maldonado has definitely been added to my favorite author list and I plan to read the rest.

Book #2 in the Severed Heirloom series called Vicious Temptation and is slated for release sometime in 2026. I can’t wait!
