My Thoughts

Fractured Vow delivers exactly what many dark romance readers are looking for: high emotional stakes, dangerous situations, and a romance that develops under intense pressure. Montana Fyre creates a world where loyalty, betrayal, and survival are constantly colliding, keeping the tension high from beginning to end.

I went into Fractured Vows expecting a dark mafia romance with plenty of tension (and it did deliver this in spades), but what kept me reading wasn’t the mafia plot, it was the relationship between Doc and Isla. I have recognized a pattern about myself; I like an Age Gap trope that is written well. From the very beginning, there’s this constant push and pull between them that had me wanting to know how they were ever going to make their situation work.

Doc is exactly the kind of morally gray MMC that I tend to enjoy when reading dark romance. He’s possessive, protective, frustrating, and occasionally made me want to shake some sense into him. At the same time, I couldn’t help rooting for him because beneath all the control and intimidation was someone who genuinely cared, even if his methods weren’t always ideal. And I will be honest; I tend to gravitate towards dark and spicy romance books that has a doctor as either the female or male main character…can’t possibly be because I am one?

Beneath Doc’s hard exterior, I enjoyed catching little tidbits, little glimpses of vulnerability and caring that made him much more relatable as not only a physician but also as a not being another stereotypical meat head alpha male written to fit the so called “type.” It will annoy you as it did me however that he is basically emotionally constipated and unable to express this underlying emotion in “healthy ways,” then again when do they in every in dark romance?

Isla had the qualities I absolutely fell in love with my favorite FMCs. In my opinion one of the strongest aspects of the plot and character development was her resilience. She is placed into an unwanted long-term situation, married to a man older than her and then placed in a completely new environment without her “core” support system. Isla has little control over any of this, but rather than becoming a passive victim in her story, she pushes back at what I felt were appropriate places (and one very big spot, she should have communicated on).

She wasn’t written by Montana Frye as flawless heroine, she had sustenance and her character feels more realistically written (then they usually do in dark romance) because she makes decisions driven by fear, emotion, loyalty and survival. I wish in some moments (trust me, you will know which when you read the book) I do wish she had trusted her instincts more, but it really served to highlight just how confusing and difficult her situation truly was for her.

What stood out most to me was the constant interplay and reading how the relationship developed between the main characters. Let’s be honest, it starts off rocky, as it would and should, but that relationship is able to develop through multiple dense layers of mistrust, obligation and attraction so heavy that I was fanning myself during the read.  I appreciated that their relationship was not instantly built on a fairytale of lies and overly unbelievable plotline. I would say that instead the relationship grew out of this situation forced on them, a situation I don’t think either one would have chosen for themselves an.

Their conversations often felt like a battle between her will and his, with the constant undercurrent of tension sitting heavy between them. Montana Frye writes beautifully done physical and emotional attraction between characters. The emotional and physical progression that the author writes felt believable to me because both characters had to earn it via misunderstandings, secrets, moment on moment of frustration and resistance woven throughout the journey. As in the real world, neither character is perfect, and in my opinion the relationship reflects that.

For me, Doc and Isla’s relationship is the heart of Fractured Vows. The mafia drama creates high intense stakes, but their evolving connection is what kept me invested from beginning to end, making the pacing excellent for someone with a brain that struggles to 100% pay attention (thank you ADHD). Their romance is messy, complicated, frustrating at times, and deeply emotionally & physically unhinged, which is exactly what I want when I pick up a dark mafia romance.

What Worked for Me:

✔️ The Relationship between Doc & Isla

The relationship was earned rather than rushed, it was believable. I feel it is the reason this book is so good and as stated prior, the relationship that is built throughout the text is the heart of Fractured Vows.

✔️ Compelling Character Dynamics

I enjoyed watching the relationship evolve despite the obstacles standing in their way. The chemistry felt believable and intense. The supporting characters woven throughout the journey were well done as well bringing great energy and strength through all parts of the story.

✔️ High-Stakes Plot

The mafia elements added suspense and danger that kept the story moving forward. There was always a sense that something significant could happen at any moment.

✔️ Engaging Writing Style

Montana Fyre’s writing made it easy to stay immersed in the story and connected to the characters’ emotions. I had never heard of her until I stumbled across her via my personal Instagram (or was it Facebook?) and read this The One Night Match: Dark Mafia Rom-Com (stay tuned for that review, it was a month before I started my blog). So glad I did.

What Didn’t Work for Me:

✘ Some Familiar Dark Romance Tropes

Readers who consume a lot of mafia romance (such as myself) will recognize several common genre elements. While enjoyable, I would say there were some somewhat predictable or cliché moments to be had.

✘ Emotional Intensity May Not Be for Everyone

The constant tension and darker themes can be emotionally draining at times, particularly for readers who prefer lighter romances. It didn’t deter me, I recommend the read for sure but I caution and advise checking the trigger warnings as well as reading a palate cleanser after something like this that is so emotionally, mentally and physically draining.

✘ Secondary Character Development

I would have loved a little more depth from some of the supporting cast to further enrich the world and relationships. I should have read the first book, Severed Ties by Montana Frye. I believe I might have had the much more needed secondary character development, but I couldn’t stop the impulse to read the age gap doctor, curse my lack of self-control.

Things to Consider Before Reading:

  • This is a dark romance and contains themes that will not be suitable for all readers.
  • Expect morally gray characters with darker than normal decisions and actions rather than traditionally heroic ones.
  • The story focuses heavily on emotional conflict with a severe side of trauma towards the end when the story reaches its peak (lol) and relationship tension.
  • Readers looking for a lighthearted romance will find the tone too intense and dark.

Check content warnings beforehand if you have specific triggers.

Neurodivergent Thoughts:

As a neurodivergent reader, I appreciated how the high stakes remained clear throughout the story. It kept my ever-struggling attention. Sometimes darker romances can become difficult to follow when multiple conflicts are happening simultaneously, but I found the central relationship and conflict easy to stay invested in.

For myself I enjoyed the spicy chemistry starting long before any actual physically intimate scenes. It was that anticipation, that energy build-up during character interactions that often hit just as hard as the actual spice did. It was the build-up for me that was the absolute most memorable part of the test. The neurodivergence needs its stimulation and Montana Frye really made this read friendly to those of us that need suspenseful story building dynamic to truly love a book.

Doc communicates through actions rather than words, he is extremely intelligent, analytical and not able to openly discuss his emotions (hello emotional constipation) nor does he feel he has to explain any decision of his he makes. If that doesn’t open the realm of potential underlying and undiagnosed neurodivergence, then I do not know what does.

Final Thoughts

Fractured Vow is an engaging dark mafia romance filled with tension, emotional conflict, and a compelling central relationship. Montana Fyre delivers a story that balances danger and romance while keeping readers invested in the characters’ journey.

I do know, having read other reviews prior to reading this text, that this book was not one of Fryes’ books that the audience received as fiercely as others in her dark romance genre. It does have some cliché moments and the relationship between main characters spends a large amount of time navigating trust issues, which for some readers I imagine can be annoying.

I sense that the reasons some readers didn’t enjoy the book as much are the reasons I ended up loving it. I don’t need the most shocking plot, or the most unhinged sexual content (a pattern I have seen begin to develop especially to get readers from the BookTok and Bookstagram) nor do I need dark mafia elements. I enjoyed the book because I truly enjoyed the characters, I cared about them as individuals (my heart hurt for Isla at the end) and I cared so much about their relationship, came to envy it in fact. Sometimes that’s enough to make a book memorable, even if it doesn’t end up being the author’s most talked-about release.

This may not be the Montana Fyre book that completely reinvents the dark mafia romance wheel, but it gave me a couple I genuinely wanted to root for—and honestly, that matters more to me than a perfectly unpredictable plot.

If you enjoy dark romance with strong chemistry, excellent written main characters with morally gray compass, and plenty of drama, this book is worth adding to your TBR.
